Inside NuStep: PressNUSTEP HOSTS COOPER INSTITUTE COURSE ON OLDER ADULT FITNESS
Workshop Offers Certification for Older Adult and Special Populations Fitness Programming "NuStep is committed to transforming lives by supporting active living, especially in older adults," said Steve Sarns, NuStep vice president of sales and marketing. "The Cooper Institute course will educate those in the health, fitness and wellness professions on the unique challenges older adults face in their quest to achieve a healthy, active life, as well as provide them with the knowledge to help older adults meet those challenges." The course will focus on the special considerations required when working with older adults, including health conditions, loss of muscular strength, compromised balance and emotional issues, such as lack of self-confidence. Course highlights include fitness programming for older adults, physiology and psychology of aging, teaching and leadership skills, as well as safety screening and fitness assessment guidelines. "Physical inactivity and low levels of fitness have become one of the world's leading public health problems; this concern is even more prominent within the aging population," said Dr. Steve Farrell of the Cooper Institute. "While fitness levels decline for both the fit and unfit person as they age, the rate of decline is somewhat slower in the fit individual. Thus, after about age 65 or so, the inactive person lacks the fitness level necessary to perform even basic living skills, while the active person can remain self-sufficient for many years to come." Of particular interest to health and fitness professionals and personal trainers alike, the Cooper Institute course will also include fitness programming for special populations: diabetics, hypertensives, stroke patients and those with low back problems. Exercise methods from walking to chair exercises will also be covered. For more information or to register for the course, contact Jane Benskey at 800-322-2209, ext. 167, or jbenskey@nustep.com.
