Richard Sarns, president and founder of NuStep, Inc., was honored with the General Electric (GE) Healthcare Award of Excellence for leadership, achievement and commitment to cardiovascular care. The Award of Excellence honors those who make outstanding lifetime achievements in the field of cardiology that have a profound effect on the quality of patient care in the U.S. and around the world. In presenting the award, Thomas Giordano, an executive with General Electric, said, "Richard Sarns is being honored for his dedication and pioneering research in cardiovascular care… Mr. Sarns is a healthcare technology pioneer…" Before founding NuStep, Inc., Sarns was the founder and president of Sarns, Inc., which designed, manufactured and distributed life support products for use during cardiovascular surgery. Sarns, Inc. was a leading producer of the heart-lung machine used by hospitals worldwide during open-heart surgery. The Sarns’ heart-lung machine was used in the first human heart transplant, which was performed by Dr. Christian Barnard in South Africa in 1967.
