NuStep and Structure House drive weight loss success
Determined senior maintains more than 50-pound weight loss through behavioral approach and unique exercise equipment.
By combining regular exercise and key lifestyle changes learned through
a unique behavioral approach to weight loss, Rose Schwartz was able to maintain
steady weight loss and during the course of a year and a half, lose more
than 50 extra pounds she gradually had gained over two decades.
The 65-year-old
retired math teacher, who currently is working as an adjunct assistant
professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz, decided to
take serious steps to lose weight when she tore cartilage in her knee.
She learned that for every pound she lost, there would be a three-pound
reduction in pressure on her damaged knee. At the time, she was wearing
a size 16W, and the extra pounds she was carrying on her 4’ 10 ½” frame
were taking their toll.
An Internet search helped Rose find Structure House, a residential
weight loss facility in Durham, N.C., that utilizes a behavioral approach.
She was attracted to the residential program’s community as well
as its exercise component and classes. The program is unique in that
it focuses on getting to the root of weight management issues by using
psychology to understand and address one’s relationship with food
while incorporating proper nutrition and exercise. In addition, Structure
House emphasizes long-term lifestyle change rather than a temporary diet
as a strategy for success.
Her four-week stay at Structure House changed the way Rose thinks,
acts, reacts, feels and lives. She better understood why she was eating
for non-nutritional reasons and learned successful techniques she could
take home with her. She began to view herself as a “student of
change” and learned to increase nutritional and exercise “structure” in
her daily life. She eliminated snacking, adhered to the goal of three
nutritious meals a day, and learned to plan meals ahead of time so as
not to be prey to cravings that cause impulse eating. She also stepped
up her exercise.
Before arriving at Structure House, Rose had been a regular exerciser;
she and her husband walked three-mile routes several days per week. However,
her knee injury put most exercise equipment off limits, including the
treadmill. Primarily limited to water aerobics, stretching and toning
exercises, she was elated to learn she could use the NuStep® TRS
4000 Recumbent Cross Trainer with virtually no negative impact on her
knee. She began tackling 40-minute workouts every other day on the NuStep® Recumbent
Cross Trainer, which provides total body conditioning and a vigorous,
calorie-burning cardiovascular workout without placing any stress on
the joints. Rose attributes much of her weight loss success to her exercise
program with the NuStep and liked the equipment so much that she asked
her husband to buy one for their home as her birthday gift, which he
did.
“I liked the seated position of the NuStep® Recumbent Cross
Trainer,” Rose said. “The stepping motion allowed me to get
a great workout without putting any weight or stress on my knee, and
it helped me burn the calories needed to lose weight.”
Rose’s initial goal was to lose 30 pounds, but the weight came off so
easily using the Structure House approach that she decided to increase her
goal to 55 pounds. She met this goal and went from 162 pounds to 107 pounds
and from that size 16W to a size 4 petite. Her husband was so proud of her
success that he purchased a whole new wardrobe for her – for all four
seasons. She gave away all her old clothes except for one pair of size 16W
slacks to remind herself of how far she had come.
To maintain her weight loss, Rose continues to incorporate the changes
she learned at Structure House. She maintains an active lifestyle with
proper nutrition and exercise that includes working out on the NuStep® TRS
4000 Recumbent Cross Trainer at home, exercising with weights and taking
long walks with her husband. She says she moves more easily and now can
do the lotus position in yoga.
She said of her weight loss, “When I went to Structure House,
it felt like I was going to school to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle.
I have a great feeling of accomplishment, and I feel like the old me.”
