General Product Questions
What is a Recumbent Cross Trainer?
A NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer is a seated stepper that provides a total body workout by simulating the natural walking motion while also providing upper body exercise. The word "recumbent" often means "lying down" in medical terminology, but a NuStep exercise machine is essentially a semi-recumbent stepper. The user is seated with legs extended as if lying down with the torso in an upright position. To see a NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer in action, please visit our video gallery.
What is the difference between a Recumbent Cross Trainer and an exercise bike, treadmill, or elliptical cross trainer?
A Recumbent Cross Trainer offers numerous advantages over other forms of exercise equipment. Its accessibility, ease of use, and safety make it a preferred choice in many healthcare and fitness programs. Our exercise machines accommodate more users by offering a comfortable seated position, variable step length, and instantaneous starting and stopping.
Our unique designs make our products easier to get on and off, and our products are easier to use and safer for those suffering from chronic or short-term conditions like knee injuries, arthritis and joint pain, heart disease, obesity, muscular deficiencies, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries, and many others.
Many people suffering from these conditions are unable to use any other piece of exercise equipment. The seated position of a NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer and the combination of a natural stepping motion and total body workout allow them to enjoy the benefits of exercise that are impossible for them to achieve on an exercise bike, treadmill, or elliptical.
A NuStep exercise machine allows the user to control the step length, and the total body motion stops as soon as the user stops. This provides better safety and security when compared to ellipticals and treadmills, which carry momentum and cannot stop immediately.
Do you have a special model or a less expensive model for home use?
Our Recumbent Cross Trainers are designed for multi-purpose applications and are safe and effective for home use and for professional settings. We offer professional grade equipment that is built to last and virtually maintenance free. NuStep now offers three models of Recumbent Cross Trainers with three price points, including our T4 model, which is the most modestly priced. Our products are made in the USA and are manufactured to meet the highest standards of quality. We believe strongly in delivering only the best products to all of our customers, so we do not offer less expensive models that are less durable or lower quality.
Do you have to plug a NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer into an electrical outlet?
The display console on our T4 model is powered by 4 AA batteries and does not require plug-in to an electrical outlet. Under normal usage, our T5 and T5XR models do not require plug-in, but if stepping rates are typically below 50-60 steps per minute, the machine may need to be plugged in periodically to recharge the battery. The T5 and T5XR display console will provide notification if the battery ever requires recharging. All T5 and T5XR units are shipped with an AC adaptor for your convenience.

We do not offer equipment rentals at this time.
How much do I pay in sales tax to buy one of your products?
We apply sales tax only for orders shipped to the states of Michigan and Indiana. Customers in Canada must be charged GST. Purchasers in Quebec may be charged QST as appropriate. Home users in Michigan and Indiana can obtain a waiver of sales tax if they provide a prescription from their doctor for exercise using a NuStep product. Nonprofit organizations in these states can also obtain a sales tax waiver by providing proof of their nonprofit status.
Do you offer trial or demo units?
Yes, we offer limited trials to professional settings, and we occasionally have demo units available for sale. However, if you are interested in trying out a NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer, we exhibit our products at a number of tradeshows and conferences throughout the year. Our list of upcoming exhibits is always available through our website, and you may also want to contact us to find out if there is a NuStep machine available for trial near you.
Will my insurance cover the cost of the NuStep?
Typically insurance companies cannot cover the cost of a NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer because it is classified as exercise equipment. However, in some instances insurance companies will provide coverage. Please consult with your insurance company if you have additional questions.
Is the purchase of a NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer tax deductible?
No.
Why should I buy a NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer over a less expensive exercise machine?
NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainers offer better quality and durability than virtually any other exercise machine. Our Recumbent Cross Trainers are designed, fabricated, and assembled in the USA at our manufacturing facility in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Nearly 90% of our components are sourced domestically, and our manufacturing operation employs a quality management system that meets the rigorous standards of ISO 9000:2001.
When you purchase a NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer, you are making an investment in a premium product that is virtually maintenance free and withstands continual use in the most demanding settings. We offer commercial grade quality with the highest level of service and support.
Our products may not be a fit for every budget, but the investment in the use of a NuStep product pays for itself in the benefits of improved health and wellness. When compared to the risks and costs of not exercising and not investing in your personal well-being, the value of a NuStep far exceeds its price. Our products have helped millions of people improve their fitness, rehabilitate injuries, avoid costly medical care, and regain and maintain their mobility, independence, and dignity.
Do you donate Recumbent Cross Trainers nonprofit organizations or home users in need?
Unfortunately, due to the volume of requests, we cannot donate our Recumbent Cross Trainers to nonprofits or to home users who are unable to purchase our products. However, we actively contribute to numerous local and national charities, and we can provide product information and other resources to help raise funds for purchases.
Do you have a GSA number?
Yes, we have a GSA number. At present it includes a contract only for the NuStep T4. If the contract is expanded to include our newest cross trainers, the T5 and T5XR, we will provide updated information on our website. Our current GSA number for the NuStep T4 is GS-03F-0056U.
Shipping and Delivery
How are your Recumbent Cross Trainers delivered?
We offer two delivery options: dock-to-dock and full service. Dock-to-dock delivery involves delivery to a loading dock or a similar location for receipt of the product. The customer assumes responsibility for the final installation and setup in the desired location. Full service delivery includes installation and setup in the preferred location, and the delivery company or a service provider will remove all packaging.
How are your Recumbent Cross Trainers shipped?
All T4 models are shipped in a single horizontal crate for delivery. Most T5 and T5XR shipments will be delivered fully assembled in a single horizontal crate. However, some delivery locations may require a multi-box shipment of the T5 or T5XR, and a service provider will be dispatched to assemble and install the machine in a desired location. Please contact a NuStep Active Living Consultant to determine your specific shipment and delivery requirements.
What is the lead time for delivery?
If you are ordering a NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer, the lead time for delivery is typically 10 to 15 business days. If you need expedited delivery, we can often provide this depending on your location. Additional charges may apply. For other NuStep products, the lead time for delivery varies, but most shipments require several business days for standard ground parcel service.
How much does it cost to ship one of your Recumbent Cross Trainers?
Shipping costs vary according to the type of delivery service selected, the delivery location, and the number of units ordered. However, most single unit shipments within North America are shipped and delivered for under $300. Please contact a NuStep representative to obtain an estimate on shipping and delivery for your location.
