2018 Gold Pinnacle Award Winner
Raleigh County Commission on Aging (RCCOA) is a non-profit, community-based human services organization that serves older adults in Beckley, a small city that lies in the Appalachian region of southern West Virginia.
The agency, which achieved national accreditation through the National Institute of Senior Centers last October, is the first accredited senior center in the state and one of 115 centers nationwide.
In a region where poverty is prevalent, especially among the elderly, RCCOA serves as a lifeline for many older adults in the county. The agency offers a full complement of social services that help older adults remain healthy, active and independent as they age.
Programming centered around the seven dimensions of wellness, which includes fitness classes, support groups, volunteer opportunities, lifelong learning and social events, keeps participants engaged in life and helps reduce isolation.
Transportation services play a critical role in ensuring participants can access the programs, services and activities at RCCOA. For those whose health conditions or limitations prevent them from using the services at the senior center, the agency provides in-home services to help them with the activities of daily living. To assist families and caregivers, the center offers an adult day program that specializes in Alzheimer’s and dementia, as well as caregiver classes and support groups.
