2015 Senior Living Winners
Paradise Valley Estates
NuStep, Inc. has named Paradise Valley Estates, in Fairfield, Calif., a 2015 Gold Pinnacle Award winner in the Senior Living division.
Paradise Valley Estates, a fully accredited continuing care retirement community located in northern California between San Francisco and Sacramento, is home to over 500 residents. It was founded in 1997 by a group of retired military officers who envisioned building a community where people with an active outlook on life could help reshape the definition of retirement living.
The community’s emphasis on wellness is carried out through innovative programs and services designed to accommodate all levels of care, from independent living to assisted living. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to wellness programming, Paradise Valley Estates takes the approach that in order for their programming to be embraced by residents, their voices must be heard. The result is an engaged, vibrant community that fulfills the founders’ vision every day.
Heritage Community of Kalamazoo
NuStep, Inc. has named Heritage Community of Kalamazoo a 2015 Silver Pinnacle Award winner in the Senior Living division. Heritage Community of Kalamazoo (HCK) is a non-profit continuing care retirement community located in southwest Michigan. HCK has 400 residents who live in one of the seven communities on the campus.
Over the last 10 years, HCK’s concept of wellness has evolved from a few seniors exercising with a video to a comprehensive, campus-wide commitment. Today their wellness program, which is based on the seven dimensions of wellness, serves all levels of care in the community. HCK’s commitment to wellness extends to the community’s 440 employees with a program called Power of Wellness (POW).
HCK also implemented Best Friends™, an internationally recognized person-centered model of care for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. Though Best Friends™ focuses on training caregivers who work with those who have Alzheimer’s, all staff members undergo Best Friends™ training to help them understand and connect with all of the residents at HCK.
NuStep, Inc. has named Oak Harbor of Vero Beach, Fla., the 2015 Bronze Pinnacle Award winner in the Senior Living division.
Oak Harbor is a gated retirement community located in the Treasure Coast region of Florida. The wellness program, which is based in the community’s clubhouse, was created 14 years ago with the goal of providing residents a comprehensive blend of activities that promote a healthy lifestyle. Nearly 150 residents participate in the wellness program at Oak Harbor.
Mindful that people orient to life in different ways, bringing different perspectives and attitudes, Oak Harbor’s wellness program offers various avenues to encourage resident participation and guide them as they take steps – whether large or small – to adopt a healthier way of life. This thoughtful approach includes monthly programs that focus on various wellness topics. Educational lectures, social activities, emotional support and exercise, which center on the month’s topic, broaden residents’ understanding of wellness and foster an environment that embraces life’s possibilities regardless of age.
