Failed your fitness resolution already? Why you shouldn’t care.

Have you ever failed on a fitness resolution? Don’t worry about it!

First, your decision to live a healthy lifestyle shouldn’t have to start at a specific time of year, or after the next birthday party, vacation or family reunion. There is always going to be an event standing in your way as an excuse to wait just a little bit longer to get started on your fitness goals. It is not about next Monday or tomorrow, it’s about starting NOW, every single day.

Second, your resolution should be a mind-set and lifestyle change, not an unobtainable goal of getting to the gym seven days per week or never drinking a soda again. If you’ve set a big fitness or health goal that is going to take a year or more to achieve, chances are life will get in the way and you might have a bad day or two.

You can’t be hard on yourself and give up on your goal because of one bad day. Shake it off, leave it in the past and move on! Instead of saying “I messed up today, I might as well stop working on my goal,” tell yourself, “that was a really delicious cupcake I had yesterday and today I choose to be healthy.”

Finally, break down your big goal into little weekly goals. The sense of achievement when you complete small goals throughout your day or week will motivate you to continue improving. You cannot stand at the bottom of a mountain and expect to be at the top overnight. You have to take small steps.

Once you finish that first section, you’re ready to take on the next one and before you know it all of you small victories will have taken you to the top of the mountain!

As you reach big milestones and start to feel in a good place with your health, you will have so much fun looking back on your journey. You’ll truly realize the small missteps didn’t matter. I love seeing all the wrong turns, detours, and straight away breakthroughs I’ve had! So, when you set those long term goals, go ahead and set them so big that they’ll scare you, but keep perspective.

It’s not about one change or about one day, it’s about waking up every day and deciding to make better choices. When you see how those changes add up to big results, you will be amazed by what you have accomplished.
